In Loving Memory of our dear friend and mentor KUSHAL

Dr. Kushalata Jayakar Ahmed was universally known as a loving friend, wife, mother, grandmother, and aunt. Born in pre-Partition Bombay, from her earliest days she welcomed relationships with people regardless of religion or color or any other descriptor. She graduated medical school in India, trained as a pediatrician and later as a psychiatrist following her 1967 immigration to New York. She married Dr. Fakhiuddin Ahmed in 1969, and they had one daughter, Yasmeen, two years later. Kushal spent decades protecting and advocating for those who needed help; she founded and directed the Brooklyn Family Center for victims of child abuse at Kings County Hospital for 25+ years, and later went on to be a founding member of the Domestic Harmony Foundation, a support network for abused women and children on Long Island. She was sharp as a tack, curious and persistent, loving and generous, and boy, could she cook. After suffering from Parkinson’s Disease for almost 30 years, she passed peacefully in her home. The world was a better place with her in it, and we were all better for knowing her.

We are so saddened for all of you and all of us! We were hoping to come and see her again once she was up to it! May God Almighty forgive her shortcomings and grant her Jannatul Firdous! May you, Yasmeen and family be comforted with wonderful memories of the bond you shared and the love you had for each other! "

"Dr. Kushalata Jayakar Ahmed was a woman of extraordinary intellect, of unwavering dedication, and of boundless kindness. She was not just a friend, she was a mentor and a guiding light. She was a woman of deep compassion, of genuine kindness and of profound wisdom. She was a lover of books and believed in the power of words. If she had not chosen the path of psychology, she would have definitely picked being a song writer and singer. Singing was her passion and she had a voice so soothing and so beautiful. The foundation is united by the love and the profound sense of loss we all feel for a woman who touched the lives of many in ways words cannot express."
